I first met my client, Heather, when I joined her soccer team after leaving my competitive club team. I was one of the newest and youngest players, and Heather was nothing but kind and supportive from day one. She continued to be that way after I launched hex + o by being one of my first e-design clients. We first started with her basement (not pictured below), soon followed by her sons’ bedrooms, and then moving into a renovation project with the boys’ bathroom. This kitchen was the first large scale renovation project we’ve done in the home.
I had so much fun designing this space. The kitchen is truly the heart of this home. It’s centered within the open main floor plan and is visible from every angle. We didn’t remove any walls, aside from a corner pantry, but with some thoughtful planning, we not only visibly increased square footage, but designed efficient storage solutions with better circulation clearances.
My favourite aspect of this kitchen is the oversized island pendant. We didn’t want to touch the ceiling, so we had to work with the existing light fixture locations. Since the new island was enlarged, we needed to balance the light fixture with the new island layout. The oversized pendant tricks the eye, and even though it’s not exactly entered on the island top, it is centred on the millwork below and hood vent, creating balance in the space.
